Pilates is a very misunderstood type of exercise! If you’ve ever thought “It’s too easy”, “It’s just for women”, or “I need equipment and expensive classes”, this article is for you!
In this article, I am going to break down five common myths and what actually works when it comes to online Pilates workouts you can do at home for real results!
I'm Natalia, a certified Pilates instructor with years of experience teaching free Pilates in London and paid Pilates, both in person and online! Online Pilates workouts are booming right now, and it really is the best way to get started if you want to try a class without leaving the comfort of your own home!
If you are a bit sceptical about how truly beneficial Pilates can be, make sure you read as I bust these 5 common myths!
Myth 1: Pilates is Just Stretching!
Truth: While Pilates does improve flexibility, it’s actually focused on strength, particularly core strength.
Pilates builds deep, stabilising muscles that support your spine, posture, and everyday movement. Even bodyweight Pilates can leave your muscles shaking in the best way. There isn't one class I've taught where a client has not felt the burn and mentioned this to me after! Pilates is challenging! You target muscle groups that you don't usually with other workout styles, so even if you think it is going to be easy (which I promise you it won't), at the very least, use Pilates as a tool to assist with your other more intense high-impact workouts!
Myth 2: You Need Equipment to See Results
Truth: You don’t actually need a reformer machine or expensive equipment to get a great strength workout in. Most free Pilates workouts online use just your body weight, a mat, and maybe a piece of small equipment such as light handweights or a Pilates ball!
Many people see major gains in strength, energy, and posture with simple routines from home.

Myth 3: Pilates Isn’t a “Real Workout”
Truth: Pilates can be gentle if you are choosing to do it for mobility and muscle recovery, but it can also be intense.
With proper technique, Pilates challenges your muscles, improves mobility, and even raises your heart rate at times. It's especially effective for those who want strength without joint strain.

Myth 4: It’s Only for Women
Truth: Pilates was actually created by a man (Joseph Pilates) and has always been for everyone, but he originally used his method to bring war veterans back to physical health in the early 20th century!
It’s used by athletes, dancers, and anyone looking to move better and prevent injury. The focus on control, breath, and core strength benefits all bodies.
Myth 5: You Have to Go to a Studio to Learn It
Truth: Not anymore. Online Pilates workouts can be found everywhere, from YouTube to apps from your favourite instructors! Many are taught by certified instructors with years of experience; however, not everyone selling a Pilates programme is properly qualified, so please make sure you check your chosen instructor's credentials. It is important to learn from someone that is truly qualified and has the necessary education behind them!
You can learn the basics at home with zero pressure, at your own pace. Another huge benefit is that no one is watching you, so you literally have nothing to worry about!
